Air Cadets from 121 (Nuneaton) Squadron and members of the Coventry Branch of the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) will be out in force in the centre of Nuneaton and Bedworth on Saturday 24th September collecting donations for the RAFA Battle of Britain Wings Appeal.
As most people will already know from the numerous television documentaries covering the Blitz and the Aerial Combat that raged over the skies of Britain in 1940, September marks the Anniversary of the ‘Battle of Britain'. As such the Nuneaton Air Cadets will be doing their best to boost this year's collection.
The collections in Nuneaton at the Charity stall in the market place and Bedworth town centre on Saturday 24th September are part of the ‘Battle of Britain Wings Appeal' by the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA), which provides for help and support for former members of the RAF and their families. With approximately 80,000 members and 500 branches in the UK, Europe and beyond the RAFA needs all the help it can get and the Air Cadets are determined to do their bit.
Flt Lt. Ian Crewe Officer Commanding 121 (Nuneaton) Squadron said, “This is an opportunity for our cadets to honour the memory of those who gave their lives in the fight for freedom in the skies over Britain during 1940. We should also remember that many cadets from 121 (Nuneaton) squadron, which was formed in 1939 actually served in the Royal Air Force during the war, some of whom lost their lives. Our parent unit 121 Squadron RAF was also operational, flying spitfires at the time of the Battle of Britain.
He added, “The nature of war has changed since World War II but not the nature of need. As the number of World War II veterans decreases the number of RAF veterans who have seen service in more recent conflicts are on the increase. As such the work carried out by the RAFA in support of former members of the RAF and their families who need help is as important today as it's ever been”
The RAFA relies on the generosity and assistance of the public to generate the vital funds needed to facilitate its welfare support for those in need. Please support the RAFA Battle of Britain Wings Appeal collection on Saturday 24th September and donate as much as you can.
