Royal Air Force Air Cadets from 121 (Nuneaton) Squadron, Veterans and the Help for Heroes RAF Bear Ran the Gun at Higham Lane School’s 75th Anniversary Gala.
On Saturday 13th September, Nuneaton 's Higham Lane School flung open its gates for a Fun Day to celebrate their 75th Anniversary year and for the OC of the Nuneaton based Air Cadet it was like going back to School all over again.
During the day the cadets and staff from 121 (Nuneaton) Squadron manned the Air Cadet display stand, which attracted a constant flow of potential recruits, parents and School staff, many of whom were extremely interested in the opportunities available to Air Cadets.
The Royal Air Force Air Cadets of 121 (Nuneaton) Squadron and a team of veterans from the Nuneaton based Veterans Contact Point also provided an extremely exciting head to head challenge when they Ran the Naval Field Gun.
This hard fought race between the ages proved to be a real crowd pleaser with both teams being cheered on by the enthusiastic crowd. The youngsters from the Air Cadets were the first to run the gun in a timed challenge against the team of Armed Forces Veterans some of whom were running the gun in competition for the first time.
The two teams of ten ran the Field Gun against the clock, disassembling, reassembling and manhandling the replica gun and limber around the gruelling course. Both teams provided an excellent demonstration of teamwork and discipline with the Air Cadet team completing the run in the shortest time.
For Flt Lt Paul Hincks, the day was a bit of a journey back in time to the days when he attended Higham Lane School . He said, “It's been more years than I care to remember since I last came through those gates but apart from one additional building the place hasn't changed a bit. I can truly say that my trip back to my old school has brought back many memories of my time at Higham Lane. It's been an extremely successful day for public relations and recruiting, we've had so many people showing an interest in joining the Squadron”.
He added , “I am glad to say that the Cadet Field Gun Run continues to act as an excellent demonstration of the importance of teamwork within the cadet forces. All the cadets and I am delighted to say the veterans from the Veterans Contact Point have all worked extremely hard today and I am glad that the Veterans, Cadets and especially the brilliant Help for Heroes RAF Bear have been able to do their bit to help to make Higham Lane School’s 75th Anniversary Gala such a success. “
