On the very early morning of Saturday 9th August, cadets from two squadrons within Warwickshire & Birmingham Wing, travelled to Asda’s ‘On your Marks’ charity event at Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground. 29F (Rugby) Squadron and 121 (Nuneaton) Squadron took part in the event, alongside lots of squadrons in South and East Midlands Wing. The air show included static aircraft like the VC-10 and a Spitfire which members of the public could go around. The Brietling Aerobatics Team, an American Mustang a variety of privately owned aircraft did many stunts over the airfield. Like many Air Shows, the day also hosted a variety of displays like dog acts and motorbike stunts (etc).
At around 8:00 on Saturday we were given a briefing of our duties throughout the day by a Wing Staff Officer from South & East Midlands Wing. The first duty that I was given was to man the recently de- commissioned RAF VC-10. Bruntingthorpe Airfield kindly opened the aircraft up, so that Cadets could give tours around it to the public. We charged members of the public around £2 to enter the aircraft, which included a detailed tour around the aircraft including the cockpit. All the money raised throughout the day was given back to Squadrons which attended.
Secondly the Cadets were tasked with operating the Car Park, we needed to make sure the cars were parking in the right place and cadets gave directions to the public to tell them were to park.
The third (and final) task of the day was manning the pits, cadet’s opened doors and escorted people to the sports cars that took members of the public around the proving ground. These cars included Lamborghinis, Lotuses, Maseratis and GTR’s. Because the cadets were doing such a good job, we were given unlimited rides down the Airfields runway in these thrilling cars.
Hopefully next year we will be able to help out South & East Midlands Wing again, as the day was very good. Overall the Squadron raised £360 from the public donations to go on the VC-10. I would also like to take the opportunity of thanking Asda for inviting us to the event.
