Royal Air Force Air Cadets from five Squadrons joined thousands of people for the fastest and biggest “On Your Marks” Asda Charity Day yet as the speed and flying festival hit a thrilling new level of excitement.
Air Cadets from 29F (Rugby), 121 (Nuneaton) 351 (Burton-on-Trent), 1188 (Coalville) and 1947 (Birstall) Squadrons spent the day helping the organisers with the car parking, handing out leaflets and conducting walk around tours of a VC10 aircraft.
Thankfully it wasn’t all work and no play, the cadets had plenty of free time to lap up the action of the thunderous flypasts and the roar of hundreds of super cars and commercial vehicles as they sped their way around the track.
Flight Lieutenant Paul Hincks, Officer Commanding 121 ( Nuneaton ) Squadron said, “The ‘On Your Marks’ charity event was an absolutely brilliant day for cadets and staff alike. Thanks to the fantastic sports car clubs the cadets got to go round the track as passengers in all sorts of dream sports cars the likes of which Jeremy Clarkson would sell his own grandmother to get a ride in. The cadets also had time to organise walk around tours of a VC10 aircraft and visit all manner of other thrilling displays including stunt drivers and motorcycle displays. This was the first time that our Squadron had been to an 'On Your Marks' event, we’d been told it was going to be good but we couldn’t have imagined just how good it was going to be".
