Members of 121 Squadron joined Staff members and guests of the Warwickshire & Birmingham Wing to celebrate their 75th Anniversary during a special dinner held at Coombe Abbey.
The guest of honour for this very special occasion was Commandant Air Cadets, Air Commodore Dawn McCafferty.
Being that this was our 75th Anniversary dinner, the Coombe Abbey venue was specially decorated in such a way as to cast the entire wing and their guests back in time to 1941 when the Air Training Corps was formed.
Ration Books, Identity Cards, Gas Mask Containers and Squadron History Cards adorned the tables. Air Raid Sirens sounded to call everyone to dinner and live entertainment was provided in the form of the RAF Bombshell Bells who sang their renditions of popular 1940’s songs, all helping to set the scene.
Thankfully the meal itself was far from 1940 Ration Book offerings and much to the delight of everyone present the Gas Mask Containers were full of lots of delicious goodies.
During her address, Commandant Air Cadets, Air Commodore Dawn McCafferty, congratulated the wing on its outstanding history and more recent successes making particular note of the contribution made by the adult volunteers who give up so much of their valuable time to make the Air Cadet Organisation such a success. Air Commodore McCafferty also gave an update of many of the ongoing issues and projects that are currently going through HQ Air Cadets.
Following the speeches and presentations Air Commodore Dawn McCafferty and Wing Commander Stuart Iles ceremoniously cut the Warwickshire & Birmingham Wing 75th Anniversary cake that had been so lovingly baked and decorated by Flt Lt Sam Collins.
With all the formalities completed it was then time for everyone to mingle and catch up on news from colleagues they had not seen for a while and dance the 1940’s night away.
On behalf of the all those who had the pleasure of attending the Warwickshire & Birmingham Wing 75th Anniversary Dinner, I would take this opportunity to extend our thanks to the Mess President Flt Lt Mandy Hobbins and her team for all the hard work that they had put into making this very special event such an outstanding success.
